18 Months

I can't believe Reed is officially closer to being a two year old than to being a one year old. This kid of ours has a grin that will melt your heart, a laugh that is infectious, a maturity that is hard to believe, and an insatiable desire to learn. To be honest, sometimes I just can't keep up!!! The other day I thought he kept saying "toes" and pointing to the wall. It took a bit of time on my part and frustration on his, but I eventually figured out he was saying "twos" and pointing to the numbers on his growth chart. Excuse me? Counting? He has yet to say the number one, but if I start it he'll follow with "twos" "three" "four" "sives" "six" "sheven" once in a while throwing in an eight, nine, and/or ten. Now whenever he sees a number he wants to count.

This last week Reed has had a bad bout with allergies and some type of virus as well - you can tell he's not 100% in his picture, and I even delayed it a day. He has wanted to cuddle more than ever, has no interest in eating, and has been sleeping a ton (see outtake below as evidence). While I do enjoy all the extra snuggling and sleeping, I just hate seeing him not feel well and can't wait to get my high-energy, always wants to be outside playing, Little Guy back. I had the same thing last week and still haven't fully recovered, so while I'd like this eighteen month post to be something special, this is going to have to do.

Monthly Statistics
Weight: 24lbs (yes he has lost weight while being sick)

Height: We are going to the Doctor in a few weeks so I will let them take care of the measuring.

Clothing Size: 12-18 month pants are still fitting but his tops and pajamas are all 18-24 months.

Shoe Size: 6

Teeth:  Still the 12 - 4 bottom/front, 2 bottom molars, and 4 top/front., 2 top molars.

Reed likes: Shoes, Soft Sheep, Pete the Puppy, and other stuffed animals, Signing Time DVDs, balls, anything that's in "his" kitchen cabinet, reading books, his pop-up tunnel, playing outside, his wagon, Dodger (all dogs for that matter), Blocks, going to gym class, bath time, his Cozy Coupe Car, his Grandma and Nonna, rocks, hats (when they are on someone else's head) and playing in puddles (especially when he knows he's not supposed to).

Reed dislikes: Sleeping in, diaper changes, saying goodbye to Mom, being told no, and nasal aspirators.

Nicknames: Reedster, Reedcito, Reed Reed, Buddy, Monkey, Honey Bear, and Sweet Pea.

Food: He loves fruit, meat, and carbs (rice, pasta, bread, muffins, cereal, and pancakes). His all time favorite thing in the world is still avocado. He usually picks around any veggie I serve, but will tolerate a handful of spinach blended in his smoothie or steamed veggies pureed with applesauce in his Little Green Pouches.

Communication: Reed is still adding one syllable words to his vocabulary all of the time. Last week he conquered his first two syllable word "Dod-yer" but somehow now all dogs have become Dodger so we are still working on the kinks with that one!

How Reed is sleeping: He goes to bed around 7:30pm, then he usually wakes somewhere between 6:00 and 7:00 am. He sleeps in a sleep sack, with a pacifier, Soft Sheep and Pete the Puppy. We also have a sound machine and a night light that goes off after about half an hour. He is still waking during the night on occasion. He goes down for his nap around 11:30/noon and sleeps 2-3 hours.

Favorite Moment(s):
Although there have been a lot of highlights this month I have to say Reed being perfectly behaved and going with the flow for our entire road trip to Southern California, really made me realize what a good Kiddo he is. He really did handle a lot in a small amount of time and seemed to take it all in stride.

Milestones:
03/11/13   Reed starts counting by saying "twos" after I say "one"
03/13/13   I decided to flip the car seat around to forward facing after having some issues with keeping it secure when rear facing
03/14/13   Reed's first two syllable word "Dod-yer"

Road Trip . . . Part 2

After all of the festivities on Saturday, plus losing an hour on Sunday morning to the time change, we were all feeling a little spent, but we packed up the car and managed to get on the road by 9:45 to Lake San Marcos where my Grandparents Ken and Norma live. They have a beautiful home on the Lake and the weather was absolutely perfect. They have an enclosed "yacht" that we scooted around the lake on. Reed loved it, especially when he got to drive the boat with Great Papa Ken. Looking at the pictures of Great Grandma Norma (aka "Blingy") and Reed together make me laugh, they just look like they are ready for trouble!!!

After our boat ride, Reed took a nap, and the four of us ate lunch and caught up for a few hours. Once the Little Man woke up it was time to pack up and hit the road again. Having a well rested toddler and a five hour drive ahead of you is a recipe for disaster, luckily my friend Sarah lives right on our way home and her two year old daughter Alyson is always up for a play date. We were able to spend about an hour and a half with Sarah and Dan chatting and enjoying their back yard while the Rugrats wore each other out. Before we left we tried to get a picture of us girls holding the other one's child, but the kids weren't too sure about that and we didn't get the great group shot I had hoped for.

Once we got back in the car Reed was a bit cranky for the next hour and half - the solution was me signing "The Wheels on the Bus" over and over again at his request ("More Bus") until we found a place to stop for dinner. Once we were all fed, Reed slept the rest of the way home. All in all it was a great weekend and we couldn't have asked Reed for better behavior.

Road Trip . . . Part 1

A few weeks back we got the exciting news that one of Jon's college roommates and his wife are expecting their first child. They live in New York, so we don't see them often, but a couple's baby shower was being thrown for them in San Diego this past weekend so we decided to load up the family and make a weekend out of it. We were able to stay with another one of Jon's roommates who lives in San Diego and has two daughters himself. It's always nice to visit someone who has kids, they understand nap times, eating demands, and their house is usually pretty kid friendly. Reed did great on our way down, hanging in his car seat for the first two hours, then we stopped for lunch, then another twenty minutes in the car and he was out for three hours. We were about half an hour away when he woke up, ate his snack, and then played happily until our arrival. Maya, Phil and Kelly's three year old daughter, was very excited to have a new friend to play with and quickly got to work showing Reed the lay of the land. She was very proud of her basil plant and even got Reed to eat an entire leaf - it's amazing what an older kid can inspire your child to do!

The shower was late in the afternoon on Saturday so we packed up the kids and spent the morning at the Aquarium. Reed was amazed by all the different animals and couldn't stop saying "ish" every time we got to a tank of fish. They have a great outdoor area for kids plus a tide pool exhibit that Reed loved.

The shower for Mark and Stacey was very nice and Adam, Marli, and Cole made the drive down from LA, so that meant all four roommates (and their families) were together for the first time in two years. Our brood has definitely expanded since then!

The boys went out after the shower was over, which meant the Moms got to tuck the little ones in, and get to bed much earlier. This was great for me because Sunday was going to be a marathon of a day. . . stay tuned . . .

Dodger gets a Vacation

Jon, Reed, and I were out of town for a few days (which I will write about very soon), so that meant Dodger got to go stay with Nonna and Pepe for the weekend. Reed had spent Thursday with Nonna and when I went to pick him up I dropped Dodger off for his extended Holiday. Their house really is a vacation for any pooch, but especially for my water loving Labrador. Reed, Nonna, Pepe, and I followed Dodger down to the "Hole" - he had made a mad dash as soon as I let him out of the car. Even though he hasn't been there in months he knew exactly where to head and I couldn't wait to see what Reed thought of his Dog's fetching skills. To say he was amazed is an understatement. The first time Dodger leaped into the water after a stick Reed stood completely frozen with his mouth agape for at least twenty seconds. Pepe gave Reed some pointers on stick throwing and we all had a great time watching Dodger in his element.

It was a "Great" Week

This week Reed had the opportunity to hang out with four of his Great Grandparents. On Wednesday he was with Nonna while I was at work and Great Gran and Great Papa stopped in to stay hi. Apparently the Little Guy put on quite a show and they were still there when Jon and I made it over to take him home. We decided to continue the fun by going to the Schoolhouse Restaurant for dinner. The food was delicious, as always, and Reed was a well behaved boy. I guess we didn't manage to get one picture with everyone's eyes open (I took the first, a waiter the second) so use your imagination and combine the two.

On Thursday Reed and I headed up to Great Papa Dean and Great Grandma Didi's ranch. It is absolutely beautiful up there this time of year with the green hillsides, wild flowers, and blossoms covering the valley floor. Reed loved seeing the cows down in the pasture and even their sometimes grumpy dog took a liking to our Little Man. Great Grandma Didi is originally form Iceland and brought Reed back a children's book from her visit this past summer. I had hoped to get a video of her reading it to him in Icelandic, but he only tolerated a page before he wanted down to go back outside again. It was a great afternoon and made me realize that the half hour drive up to their place makes for a very nice afternoon field trip. An added bonus is that we picked Grandma up on our way and Grandpa made a surprise stop by too.
