A Day in the Life of The McClartys

It's been about 9 months since I've done one of these so I was thinking about stopping them altogether, but I honestly can't remember what I've done day to day and thought it might be interesting to look back on in a few years. The documented day was Monday February 29th, Reed had school, I didn't work, and Jon is on his "off-season" schedule. Reed is almost 4.5 years old, Kieran is 2.3 years old and Dodger is 8.5 years old.

1:30 am Kieran cries and there is a weird sound, so I head to his room to investigate. I'm not sure what made the sound but I tuck him in and he goes right back to sleep.

5:30 am My alarm goes off and I get up and do a full body weight workout.

6:00 am Kier is awake, he pees in his potty (standing up), and then notices our kitchen is covered in ants. We go on a massive ant hunt and clean up the casualties.

6:15 am Kieran declares he needs to poop and runs over to his potty.

6:25 am I make K breakfast (cinnamon and raisin wheat roll, raspberries, hemp milk, 2 vitamins, and 2 gummies he earned for the potty).

 6:30 am Jon gets up and takes over breakfast so I can go running.

7:00 am Reed wakes and goes potty and Jon gives him the breakfast I had left for him. 

7:10 am K runs to the toilet and poops and pees.

7:30 am I'm home from running. I give the boys each eye drops (they had conjunctivitis), and then I give Reed his inhalers and nasal spray. The boys help me unload the dishwasher. Then I clean up the kitchen while they play.

 

7:55 am Jon leaves for work, the boys go back to playing together, I make our bed, and then get them dressed (Reed gets his pajamas off by himself and some of his clothes on unassisted).

 

8:05 am I set the boys up in our room with the iPad playing the show Super Why while I shower, 5 minutes in I hear yelling and screaming. I tell them I'll be out in a minute. I find them on the bed both yelling "Siri play Super Why" (apparently Reed had paused it to get water and then Kieran had hit the home button). I get the show to play again, get dressed, place an Amazon order, sort laundry and throw a load in the washing machine. Then I have the boys go potty and gather up stuff we need for the day. I get the boys in their shoes and buckle them in their car seats (which is always a huge battle with Kieran).

 

8:45 am We leave the house, drop Reed off at school (K always insists on signing Reed in), and then hit up Starbucks. Kieran and I sit outside since the weather is nice and share a breakfast sandwich so he can get some exposure to dairy/eggs/soy he drinks cows milk and I have a latte. I briefly check work emails and then we spend the rest of the time chatting. When we are done, Kieran uses the potty and then we head out to pick up some plants for our backyard and then get gas.

10:10 am Kieran and I are home, I start the dryer, we unload plants from the car, I let K attempt to open an Amazon package while I fold clothes, then he helps me rotate laundry. I have K pee before we leave the house again and he gets two gummy bears to take along with us as his reward.

 

10:40 am We take Dodger on his walk, Kieran rides in the stroller for half of the time and then gets out and takes over Dodger walking duty.

 

11:20 am  We are home from our walk and I find a replacement gummy worm because he dropped the other gummies in the dirt. I once again fold clothes while Kieran "mops" and then he helps me rotate laundry. Then we work on a Birthday package for Haleigh and K draws in a card for her.

 

11:40 am Kier pees, I get his shoes on, and we get back in the car to pick up Reed. We are there a few minutes early so I talk to our pest guy about the ant situation and then text Nonna to see if she can watch the boys at our house tomorrow to accommodate the pest treatment. 

12:05 pm Reed emerges from his classroom and tells us all about his day on our way home. We also decide what we are going to have for lunch during the drive: corn tortillas, avocado, grilled pork, apple/pomegranate sauce, and hemp milk.

 

12:15 pm We are back in the house. Half way through me making lunch Reed declares he has to poop and goes running to the bathroom. 

12:25 pm All three of us sit down to eat lunch and somehow it turns into me guessing what dinosaur they've made by taking bites out of their tortillas. Kieran manages to spill his milk so I clean up the mess and then while the boys finish their lunch I fold another load of laundry and giggle to myself as I I overhear their discussion on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

 

12:50 pm They are finally all done with lunch, I wipe them up, give another dose of eye drops, and then they play while I do dishes. A screaming match starts when one picks up my phone. Kieran hits Reed so I put him in a timeout and then ask him to apologize. When K tries to hug Reed to say sorry a chase ensues and they are both screaming and laughing until one stops at their play kitchen and they take turns placing to go orders on their play phone.

 

1:10 pm Kieran goes potty and earns two gummies, then we read 1 book (Star Wars 1,2,3), and sing 1 song (TMNT theme song).

 

1:25 pm I say goodnight to K and he's upset, but stays in bed and falls asleep in about 20 minutes. Reed and I finish Haleigh's Birthday package. I go out to get mail and tell Reed I'll meet him in his room in a few minutes. When I come back in the house he's made me a "coffee."

 

1:50 pm Reed and I play a game he's made up called "turtles and dinosaurs vs bad guys."

 

2:05 pm I start Reed's quiet time and then I make meatballs, clean up my mess, and start putting laundry away. 

3:05 pm I go into Reed's room and tell him his quiet time is over if he wants to come out. He wants to keep playing so we chat while I put away his laundry. He asks me to turn on the song Conga while he turns off his light and gets his flashlight and we have a mini dance party, then we play a board game twice. We go to the kitchen and make a smoothie (apple juice, banana, blueberries, flax seeds).

 

3:55 pm Kieran is still sleeping so I wake him up (I almost never let him sleep past 4:00pm), he goes potty, and I do another set of eye drops with the boys. To get them to hold still during the eye drops by letting them watch a 5 minute episode of Pepa Pig, while they are finishing watching I clean off the outdoor table and move our snacks outside. When we are done with smoothies, etc the boys play in the front yard while I attempt to pick up the garage a bit. They are both excited when Skittles the cat (formerly known as Sneakers) comes over to visit - we now share her with our neighbors.

 

4:45 pm  Jon is home, we chat while the boys continue to play.

 

5:10 pm Jon stays outside while I finish putting away laundry and get the rest of dinner cooking.

5:30 pm The boys are all back in the house, R and K (and probably Jon) have peed on plants outside. We have a dance party while dinner finishes cooking.

5:55 pm We have dinner together (spaghetti, meatballs, broccoli, and hemp milk). At one point Kier gets carried away with his milk and Jon tries to take it away and instead spills it everywhere. It's definitely one of those moments that all you can do is laugh.

6:30 pm Jon takes the boys to the bath while I do dishes. He administers Reed's medicines and helps them brush their teeth.

 

6:50 pm Everyone is back out in the living room. K pees in his potty, I do our last round of eye drops for the day, and they watch an episode of The Magic School Bus. While the boys are occupied with TV I finish cleaning the kitchen, feed Dodger, and pay bills. Jon cleans up the bathroom, showers, and starts packing for the business trip he is getting ready to leave on.

7:25 pm We take the boys to go potty one last time and then Jon reads one book to the boys in Reed's room and then we say goodnight to him at 7:35. Then I read a book in Kieran's room, Jon says goodnight, and I lay down and sing a few songs with him. I say goodnight to Kieran at 7:45

 

8:00 pm Reed is asleep.

8:15 pm I head to Chelsea's house to watch The Bachelor (judge me, I don't care) while Jon stays home.

8:20 pm Jon texts me that Kieran is asleep.
