Week 1

I can't believe how fast time flies. Reed is already 11 days old and has changed so much from the day he was born it is amazing! It makes me realize how important it is to take pictures and document his daily happenings because he is going to be a little boy before we know it.

Week 1 was a whirlwind of events:

Tuesday September 20th Reed was born. I wasn't released from the Recovery Room until after 1:00 am on the 21st and because the hospital was so busy we were put in a room with another mom and newborn and Jon wasn't allowed to spend the night. Reed did great all night long. He never really made a peep and had to be awaken each time he needed to be fed. I also was awaken throughout the night to have my blood pressure and temperature checked, to be poked and prodded in not nice spots, and to feed my little one.

Wednesday was a very busy day. The hourly checks on me and Reed continued and we had lots of visitors (see my Introductions post - all but one of these visits occured on the 21st). By the end of the day I was exhausted but Reed was still being a trooper and again slept soundly through the night, having to be awaken for feedings, etc. Unfortunately my roommate's baby wasn't so kind and spent most of the night crying. I know you aren't supposed to get much sleep as a new mom, but I was at least hoping it would be my own child keeping me up!

Reed's standard sleeping position while in the hospital

By the time Thursday morning rolled around I was ready to be out of the hospital, my nurse told me this was wishful thinking on my part and that I should plan on being there for at least one more day. My doctor came by first thing and actually told me that he was fine releasing me to go home - YES!!!! For us to be able to leave I would need Reed's pediatrician to agree and have all of the newborn tests completed. It was a big game of "Hurry-up-and-Wait." I will spare you all of the boring details but at 9:15 pm we finally were released from the hospital. Reed wasn't sure what to make of his carseat at first and let out some pretty good cries which morphed into this weird cackling cry. It would have broken our hearts if we hadn't found it so absolutely hilarious. Jon and I were both laughing so hard and agreed that we were probably being really bad parents.

Heading home from the hospital

I would like to say Friday was spent lounging around the house but instead we had to take Reed back up to Fresno to have a jaundice test done and to meet with the Pediatrician. The good news is that he was within the normal range for jaundice. We also got practice at changing a diaper on the seat of the car and eating in the car with a baby (I refused to take my 3 day old child into a restaurant). The highlight of the day was definitely coming back to the house and being able to introduce Reed to Dodger. My little guys did great. They basically looked at and sniffed each other and then promptly fell asleep.

Can you make out Reed's "I Love Dodger" Onesie?
It was great to be home over the weekend. We had more visitors (there will be another Introductions post soon) and most importantly the three (sorry Dodger, I mean four) of us were able to hang out. Reed continued to be a great baby. He spent most of his time sleeping and eating and we settled into our new life as a family.
